The library is a vessel of culture and information, stranded in the heart of the city: a new urban landmark that searches for connections with the urban fabric and to dialog with the surrounding buildings. A building form that functions as invitation, frame and enabler to the multiple passages and trajectories of its users. The library dialogues on an urban scale with the Parliament: the west face of the library bends herself to get parallel to the Parliament’s facade, whose steps has the same size of the library’s one. The buildings of the new library, of the Parliament, of the Kiasma and of the Music Center delimit ideally a unique wide urban square. The north face of the library lines up to the disused railroad’s building, opening towards the park and to the Alvar AAlto ‘s Finlandia Hall. The project is essentially made up of two parts: the basement and the sculptural volume above. The basement houses a public gallery, interior to the building and accessible from every side of the lot, which channels all the ways coming from the city centre (South) and from the park (North). In the basement are placed all the public activities not strictly connected to the library, distributed along a public gallery and a ramp, which gets to the connection to the adjacent hypogeal building designed as cultural and musical center, placed west of the library. In the basement there are the cafeteria and the bookshop, the infopoint, the wardrobe and the service rooms, the multipurpose hall, the cinema, the service and loading area. All along the gallery are distributed break spaces and informal sittings, even on steps. The big wainscotted shell, ideally suspended over the basement, hosts every function of the library. Over the large ramp that runs along the basement opens up a floor-to-ceiling space illuminated with both overhead lighting (thanks to skylight that can be opened to allow natural ventilation) and sideways towards the west. This full-height, large empty space becomes the reference point to get oriented inside the building, since all the spaces overlook there – and they are immediately recognizable by the visitor entering from the hall. The area of the entrance to the library is located at the first floor, and it’s accessible from both the inner gallery of the basement and the large external steps. On the next floors there are the open-shelf area, distributed upon sloping steps, the kids area and the Learning and Doing area, the offices and the labs. The last floor hosts the functions that can be used during the library’s closing time: the panoramic restaurant and the sauna, the garden and all of the offices, the meeting rooms (overlooking the park) which can be rented from the customers even in times different from the library opening one’s and that are immediately next to the restaurant. The large entry stairscale, besides having an evident simbolic/representative value, can be utilized even as a break place, for plein-air theatrical representation (open air resting place, panoramic, it’s oriented towards south-west, therefore it’s perfect from a climatic point of view).
